Join us for this short lunchtime talk that investigates the emergence of picture houses/cinemas across Britain from the early 1900s.

Were cinemas born from music halls and travelling fairs, or did they grow from changes in the existing landscape of public entertainment?

Independent cinema historian and author Dr Andrew Shail takes us on a virtual tour of archives from Malvern to Hartlepool, before arriving back in Tyne & Wear and attempting to answer the question ‘Where do cinemas come from?’

Tea/coffee included.

“All prices include a venue levy and £2.50 booking fee (listed as cmsn during the checkout process) unless otherwise stated. All fees apply whether booking online, over the phone or in person at the box office.

The Tyne Theatre and Opera House box office is open for phone and in-person bookings from the 1867 Cafe Bar 10am-3pm Mon-Fri (or until show start if there is a performance that evening + an hour before weekend performances).
