This exhibition is on loan from the Carl Rosa Trust and can be viewed until 16th March during our cafe opening hours (10am to 3pm, on show days 10am until show end).

The Carl Rosa Opera Company still holds the record as the longest-running and most successful travelling opera company in British history. The Carl Rosa Trust Ltd was established in May 1953 through an agreement made between the Carl Rosa Company and the Arts Council of Great Britain. From 1953 to 1960 the Trust was responsible for the running and administration of the Company.

Since 1960, when the Carl Rosa Opera Company gave its last performance, the Carl Rosa Trust has used its resources to support opera singers by awarding grants. The Carl Rosa Trust is active today in its role as sole custodian of the Carl Rosa Archive. Find out more at:

Carl Rosa Opera Company at the Tyne Theatre

The Rosa Company brought many of their touring performances to the Tyne Theatre & Opera House between 1874 and 1914. They visited us 230 times, with over 90 different productions! In 1893 they visited the theatre 17 times. The Carl Rosa Company performances at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House came to an end during the 1st World War and the theatre’s transformation into the Stoll Picture Theatre in 1919.
