Autumn Update from Jonathan Higgins, CEO of Tyne Theatre and Opera House

As we move into the final months of 2025, there’s a real sense of excitement and momentum at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House. The past year has been one of growth, renewal and creativity – and our programme for the remainder of the year and into early 2026 is our strongest yet.

Over the summer, we proudly completed the Gallery Reseating Project, a significant milestone in the theatre’s ongoing restoration journey. This major capital improvement has transformed the upper tiers of our beautiful Victorian auditorium, enhancing comfort, improving sightlines and increasing overall capacity. The project was made possible through the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust, whose shared commitment to preserving and developing this remarkable building continues to make a lasting impact.

From now through to January, our stage will welcome a fantastic range of performances: from the most popular comedians and acclaimed touring theatre to live music, family entertainment and festive favourites. Highlights include stand-up from some of the UK’s best-loved comics, powerful live performances that showcase our region’s talent, and of course, our much-anticipated annual pantomime.

Speaking of panto — this year’s Cinderella is already shaping up to be a record-breaking run. Advance ticket sales are stronger than ever before, and audiences can expect a dazzling production filled with laughter, magic and festive sparkle. With the same cast returning for our special ‘Adult Panto’ performances in early January, those shows are also selling quickly following last year’s sell-out success.

One of this autumn’s most memorable moments was an unexpected but very special visit from two of the theatre world’s most influential figures — Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Michael Harrison, CEO of Crossroads Entertainment. It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to show them around our beautiful Victorian theatre and to share our story of preservation, progress and ambition. Their enthusiasm for what we are doing here in Newcastle was both inspiring and affirming.

As we look ahead, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust continues to grow in confidence and purpose. In the coming weeks, we’ll be posting details on how to submit an Expression of Interest to become a Volunteer Trustee. This is an exciting opportunity for people with passion, skills and commitment to play a direct role in shaping the next chapter of our historic venue’s future.

It’s an exciting time to be part of the Tyne Theatre family — whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
