The Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust is inviting passionate and skilled individuals to join its Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment in the theatre’s history.

As the organisation embarks on an ambitious programme of restoration, conservation and community development, new trustees will play a key role in helping to preserve one of the UK’s most remarkable historic theatres for future generations.

Built in 1867 by industrialist and politician Joseph Cowen, the Grade I listed Tyne Theatre & Opera House was created as “a Theatre for the People”.

More than 150 years later, that vision remains central to the organisation’s mission: providing a warm, welcoming venue with a diverse programme of entertainment, education and community activity for audiences across the region.

 

Exciting times ahead

The recruitment drive comes as the Trust prepares to deliver a transformational programme of heritage restoration and capital investment.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded the Trust development funding of £556,793, enabling the organisation to develop plans for a major project worth approximately £7.2 million.

The next stage will include an application for a full £5 million grant to help bring these ambitions to life.

The programme will focus on several key areas, including:

• Restoration of the historic auditorium, returning it closer to its original 1901 appearance while improving comfort and accessibility.
• Completion of the internationally significant stage machinery restoration project, which will create one of the most complete examples of Victorian stage machinery anywhere in the world.
• The next phase of the Westgate Music Hall restoration, creating a new performance and community space within the theatre complex.
• Improved accessibility, visitor facilities and community spaces throughout the building.

 

A chance to make a lasting impact

Trustees are responsible for supporting the strategic direction and governance of the charity, helping to ensure that it continues to deliver on its charitable objectives while protecting the theatre’s unique heritage.

Working alongside the Board, Chief Executive and Executive Team, trustees provide oversight, expertise, challenge and guidance as the organisation evolves.

The Trust is particularly keen to hear from individuals with backgrounds in:

• Chartered surveying
• Project management
• Project design and procurement
• Fundraising
• Data and IT
• Sustainability
• Human resources, training and development

However, a passion for the theatre, strong strategic thinking and a commitment to supporting the organisation’s long-term success are just as important as professional expertise.

 

Supporting Newcastle’s cultural future

Looking ahead, the Trust’s vision is clear.

By 2035, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House aims to be fully accessible, financially resilient, a thriving heritage and community hub, and a significant contributor to Newcastle’s cultural identity, wellbeing and local economy.

To achieve that vision, the organisation is seeking trustees who can bring fresh perspectives, diverse experiences and a collaborative approach to governance.

The Trust is particularly committed to building a more diverse and inclusive Board and welcomes applications from groups currently underrepresented in cultural sector leadership, including disabled people and individuals from the global majority.

 

Interested in joining the Board?

The voluntary role requires an average commitment of one to two days per month, including attendance at quarterly Board meetings held in Newcastle.

Reasonable expenses are reimbursed, and trustees also enjoy opportunities to attend events and performances.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to arrange an informal conversation and theatre tour before applying.

Applications close on 31 August 2026, with interviews scheduled for September 2026 and successful candidates expected to join the Board in January 2027.
