Philip Bernays OBE Appointed Chair of Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust
Philip Bernays OBE replaces outgoing Chair Mike Wilmot
The Board of Trustees of the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Philip Bernays OBE as its new Chair.
The appointment comes at an exciting period of development for the 158-year-old Grade I listed Victorian theatre, which continues to strengthen its position as one of the North East’s leading cultural venues and heritage attractions.
Home to one of Europe’s finest and fully operational examples of Victorian wooden stage machinery, the theatre remains internationally significant for both its cultural programme and unique theatrical heritage.
Philip Bernays brings with him decades of experience and leadership within the UK theatre and cultural sector. Most notably, he served as Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Newcastle for 16 years, overseeing a period of substantial artistic and organisational success.
His distinguished career has also included senior leadership and governance roles across a number of major cultural institutions nationwide, earning him widespread respect throughout the industry. In 2024, he was awarded an OBE in recognition of his outstanding services to theatre and the arts.
Speaking following his appointment, Philip Bernays OBE said:
“I am absolutely delighted to be taking on the role of Chair of the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust.
“The theatre is not only one of the country’s most extraordinary surviving Victorian theatres, but also a hugely important cultural asset for Newcastle and the wider region. It’s remarkable heritage, combined with its ambitious and forward-looking vision, makes this an incredibly exciting moment to become involved.
“I look forward to working closely with Jonathan, the trustees, staff and supporters as we continue to build upon the theatre’s success and secure its future for generations to come.”
Philip succeeds outgoing Chair Mike Wilmot, whose association with the theatre stretches back to childhood.
During his tenure as Chair, Mike has provided steadfast leadership, guidance and support through a series of significant restoration and development projects, helping to secure and enhance the future of one of the country’s most remarkable historic theatres.
Outgoing Chair Mike Wilmot said:
“The Tyne Theatre has been part of my life for as long as I can remember and it has been a tremendous privilege to serve as Chair during such an important chapter in its history.
“I am immensely proud of what has been achieved through the dedication of trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters alike. From restoration works to strengthening the theatre’s role within the community, we have made significant progress together.
“I leave the role with enormous confidence in the future of this very special theatre and I am delighted to welcome Philip as my successor.”
Jonathan Higgins, Chief Executive of the theatre and Trust, added:
“On behalf of the management team, staff and trustees, I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Mike for his years of exceptional commitment, leadership and unwavering support for the theatre. His passion for the Tyne Theatre and Opera House has helped guide the organisation through a number of transformational projects and periods of development.
“We are equally delighted to welcome Philip as our new Chair. Philip’s experience, reputation and deep understanding of the cultural sector will be invaluable as we continue to develop the organisation and broaden our impact.
“Collectively, the management, staff and trustee team remain fully committed to ensuring that Newcastle’s Heritage Theatre for Everyone continues to sit at the very heart of the city and wider region’s cultural offering for generations to come.”
The Tyne Theatre and Opera House, originally opened in 1867, is regarded as one of the finest surviving Victorian theatres in Europe and continues to operate as a thriving live entertainment venue, welcoming audiences to a diverse programme of performances, events and heritage activity throughout the year.
