A Tribute to Alan Butland (1944–2026)

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Butland, a much-admired friend of Tyne Theatre & Opera House, a dedicated Trustee, and an enthusiastic supporter of everything we do.

Alan’s contribution to the theatre over many years was profound. As a Trustee, Company Secretary, and longstanding supporter, he brought unwavering commitment, generosity of spirit, and a deep sense of care for this extraordinary building. His leadership of our volunteer guides was marked by genuine passion and dedication, and it was evident to all who worked alongside him that the theatre held a very special place in his heart.

Alan’s love of theatre extended far beyond Tyne Theatre & Opera House. As a Friend of the Theatre’s Trust, a member of the Frank Matcham Society, and through his involvement with Shakespeare’s Globe, he demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the preservation and celebration of theatre heritage. His knowledge and advocacy enriched our work and helped us to better understand the wider cultural importance of what we do.

Those who worked with Alan will remember not only his expertise but also his quiet, reflective and deeply thoughtful approach. He took the time to consider each issue with care and integrity, and his perspectives were always valued by Trustees, staff and volunteers alike. On a personal level, many of us will remember his gentle but consistent words of encouragement, offered generously and without fanfare.

Alan was greatly encouraged by the recent progress and developments at the theatre, and it is a comfort to know that he saw the positive direction of travel. In his memory, we rededicate ourselves to securing the long-term future of this wonderful and precious place that meant so much to him.

Our thoughts are with Stephanie and Alan’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
